Every type of piano
We move spinets and consoles, studio and full uprights, baby grands, parlor grands, and concert grands. Digital pianos and organs are handled too, with attention to the electronics rather than the weight.
Each type has its own carry technique. Uprights travel on a four-wheel dolly, while grands come apart at the legs and lyre and ride on a padded skid board on their side.
Player pianos and older instruments with worn casters get extra attention, since a missing or seized wheel changes how the piano can be moved across a floor.
Measuring before moving
Before the day, we ask for the piano's dimensions and photos of the route out: doorways, hall turns, stair landings, and the path to where the truck can park. On tricky houses we come out to look in person.
This is how we avoid the moment where a grand is halfway out a door and clearly not going to make the turn.
Sending the photos a few days ahead also lets us confirm the crew size, which for a grand on a staircase is never fewer than four.
Stairs, elevators, and apartment rules
Stair carries use a ramp or a stair-climbing dolly and three or four movers, with the piano strapped to its board throughout. Freight elevators in Plano and Frisco apartment towers need booking in advance, and we confirm the weight rating before the day.
HOA-managed buildings often limit moving hours, so we schedule the piano within the allowed window and let the office know when we will be on site.
Protecting the instrument in transit
The lid, keyboard cover, and music stand are secured, the whole piano is wrapped in thick blankets, and in the truck it is strapped to the wall so it cannot shift. It rides upright or on its skid board and never on its back.
On long-distance runs within Texas the piano is loaded last and unloaded first. A closed trailer in summer can climb well above the outside temperature, and heat and humidity are the enemies of tuning and glue joints.
Placement and settling in
We set the piano where you want it and recommend an interior wall away from windows, vents, and fireplaces. Legs and pedals go back on, and we level it before we leave.
Wait a few weeks before tuning so the wood adjusts to its new room. Tuning immediately usually means paying for a second tuning soon after.
